More than 100 people—including local villagers, social activists, political leaders, and news reporters—gathered peacefully today in Uttan Dongri to observe tree-cutting work being carried out by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA).

The tree removal is reportedly linked to infrastructure development, potentially for a metro car shed. However, locals have voiced strong concerns, stating that they do not support the car shed project at the cost of their natural forest area.

“This forest is not just green cover—it provides seasonal income through forest produce, hosts rare birds and wildlife, and contains several valuable medicinal plants,” said one concerned villager. “Cutting these trees will destroy our environment and livelihood.”

The crowd, though peaceful, expressed disappointment over the lack of proper consultation with the local community. Many emphasized that the area is home to rich biodiversity and is an essential part of their daily life.

While the MMRDA has not yet issued a public clarification on the project’s scope, the presence of media and citizens reflects growing awareness and concern over environmental issues in the region.
