On May 19, 2025, the Supreme Court of India ordered a status no demolition regarding the proposed demolition of allegedly unauthorized constructions at the Bale Shah Peer Dargah in Uttan, near Bhayandar, Maharashtra. The bench, comprising Chief Justice BR Gavai and Justice AG Masih, issued a notice to the Maharashtra government in response to a petition challenging the demolition order. The Court scheduled the matter for hearing after four weeks and directed that the current state of affairs be maintained until then.
The demolition had been ordered by Maharashtra Revenue Minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule, following allegations that the Bale Shah Peer Charitable Trust had encroached upon protected mangrove areas on government-owned land near the ecologically sensitive Chowk Jetty in Uttan. The minister announced the demolition in response to a query raised by legislator Niranjan Davkhare in the State Legislative Council.
The Supreme Court's intervention ensures that no demolition activities will proceed at the site until the matter is further reviewed.
