The Maharashtra government has approved Phase One of the Uttan Virar Sea Link (UVSL) project, a major infrastructure initiative aimed at easing traffic congestion and boosting connectivity between North Mumbai and the northern suburbs. As part of the Mumbai Ring Road plan, the UVSL will include a 24-km sea link and 30.77 km of connecting roads, forming a 55-km corridor. The eight-lane sea link will feature emergency lanes and integrate with major routes like the Versova-Dahisar North Coastal Road and Dahisar-Bhayander Link Road.
Key features include:
AI-powered Intelligent Traffic Management System (TMS)
Navigational spans for unhindered maritime traffic
A 1.2-km tunnel near Arnala Fort in Virar
Estimated to cost ₹87,400 crore, the project may be funded by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). With the Detailed Project Report (DPR) submitted, construction will begin after final clearance. Once completed, the UVSL is expected to reduce travel time, support economic growth, and significantly improve the quality of life for commuters in the region.
